Story & Narrative

Story & Narrative

Story;
The story never changes, This is where the script writers creativity is really shown, as the actually screening of the script will be a lot different from the written script as the directors may cut out small bits of the script but the story never changes. Story is NOT a synonym for Narrative.
Narrative;
The narrative is how the story is told. The Narrative is changed by the Director, this is due to costs and also for a chance to give the director their view and how they would shoot the scene.

Narrative Structure

Classical Hollywood Narrative Film Structure;
1. Exposition; Introduction to Key characters, and locations.
2. Development; In Depth introduction to the characters, help's you know the characters.
3. Complication; Something goes wrong, which effects the characters.
4. Climax; The problem gets sorted through a scene which gets heated up.
5. Resolution; Happy ending, the film is finished.
This is a LINEAR structure.

3 Act Structure;
1. Equilibrium; A balance, everything is fine.
2. Disequilibrium; A change in the balance, something goes wrong, a problem which will need to be solved.
3. New Equilibrium; A balance is achieved again.
A 3 Act structure is common in Television shows, such as soaps like Eastenders.
